First Presbyterian Church of Evanston is fortunate to have two
fine instruments. At the front of the sanctuary is a 3-manual, 64-rank,
electro-pneumatic Aeolian-Skinner organ built in 1958. The organ
includes stops from the original 1881/1895 Johnson instrument as
well as several from the 1940 Holtkamp organ. In 1985, a multi-level
combination action was installed, and portions of the organ's relay
were converted to solid state switching. In the spring of 2001,
the conversion was completed by installing a multiplex (encoded)
switching system, which controls all stops and couplers. In addition,
a full Peterson MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) system
was installed, allowing digitally sampled sounds of other musical
instruments to be played from the organ keyboards, and the organ
to be played from a remote keyboard.
The chapel is graced by a 34-rank, 3-manual Austin
organ built in 1969. It also has electro-pneumatic action, and is
located in the rear balcony of the chapel.
