The tradition of handbells at First Presbyterian
Church is a long and rich one. From the beginnings some 30 years
ago, with one 2-octave set of handbells, to the present with two
sets of handbells (one 5-octave set of Malmark and one 6-octave
set of Schulmerich bells), and two complete 4-octave sets of Malmark
choirchimes, handbells are an important musical element in our congregation.
Ringing begins in M & M Club (rehearsing Wednesday
afternoons 5:00-5:45) with fourth graders, using choirchimes. Then
in Seventh grade, ringers become part of the First Ringers (4:00-5:00
Wednesdays), and move into the Westminster Bells (5:45-6:45 Wednesdays)
in ninth grade. These groups are directed by Emily Williams.
For adults, there are two opportunities. The Chancel
Bells (Saturday mornings at 9:00) is a fairly advanced group of
adult ringers with significant ringing or musical experience. The
Golden Bells, directed by Matt McLeod, (Monday evenings at 7:00)
is a group comprised of adults with and without disabilities ringing
side-by-side, a group in which relationships are built and alternate
forms of music notation are used.
In addition to the individual bell choirs contributing
in worship services six-eight times a year, the combined bell choirs
lead in worship an annual Handbell Sunday in early May.
