What Does It Mean To Be A
Follower?
We are all on a pilgrimage of learning
what it means to follow Christ. To be a Christian means to be a
"follower" or "disciple" of Jesus.
James Montgomery Boice puts it this way,
"Discipleship is not a supposed
second step in Christianity, as if one first becomes a believer
in Jesus, and then if he or she chooses, a disciple. From the beginning,
discipleship is involved in what it means to be a Christian."
How do I begin to follow?
Billy Graham
encourages us to give as much as we know about ourselves to as much
as we know about Jesus. Following Jesus starts with a simple step
forward; leaving our old life behind (what the Bible calls repentance),
allowing Jesus to have authority in every aspect of our life, and
placing our hope for eternity into His hands.
You can do so through what the Bible calls prayer.
Prayer is simply talking with God, like you would with a friend.
Here is a suggested prayer written by author and theologian John
Stott.

"Lord Jesus Christ, I acknowledge the
I have gone my own way. I have sinned in thought, word and deed.
I am sorry for my sins. I turn from them in repentance. I believe
that you died for me, bearing my sins in your own body. I thank
you for your great love. Now I open the door. Come In, Lord Jesus.
Come in as my Savior, and cleanse me. Come in as my Lord, and
take control of my me. And I will serve as you give me strength,
all my life. Amen."

"Being confident of this: that he
who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until
the day of Christ Jesus." [Philippians 1:6]
