Sheldon Jackson
College, Alaska’s oldest educational institution, was founded
in 1878 by Presbyterians in Sitka, Alaska in order to offer Native
Americans the opportunity for higher education. Formerly an Alaskan
native school, Sheldon Jackson College now serves a student body
that is both Alaskan native and Anglo. A fully accredited private
four-year liberal arts college, SJC is in a covenant relationship
with the Presbyterian Church. The school offers programs in natural
and aquatic resources, outdoor recreation, fisheries, marine biology,
business, elementary and secondary education, and interdisciplinary
studies.
