Bering
Witness |
When Presbyterian missionaries came to St. Lawrence
Island on the Alaskan archipelago in 1981, a series of faithful
pastors and teachers began working with the indigenous people there
known as the Yupik. Today, many Christians continue to work steadfastly
in this area of the Bering Strait among the Yupik who maintain a
traditional lifestyle. Founded in 1992, Bering Witness, an indigenous
mission outreach in Russia’s Far East, proclaims the Gospel
in the Yupik language to reach this community through a Yupik ministry.
This mission is anchored by the life and witness of three Yupik-speaking
Presbyterian congregations, one in the mainland town of Nome and
two in the island villages of Gambell and Savoonga. Encouraged by
the Presbytery support of the Yukon for Bering Witness, the Yupik
missionaries are, nevertheless, in need of helpers to work alongside
them.
