First Presbyterian Church is part of a consortium of shelters in Evanston that seeks to care for our homeless neighbors, giving them a safe and warm place to spend time and experience a friendly atmosphere during the winter months each year. Be present for one of two shifts on Mondays between 3:30 and 7 p.m., November through March at the Warming Center here at the church. We spend time talking to the guests, playing checkers with them, or sometimes are just a quiet presence. A Bible Study for the guests that want to participate is held each week. No experience is needed. Contact George Collins at 847.475.0226.
FPCE is expanding our warming shelters to some overnight events for those days when it gets below 15 degrees. This is a great opportunity to minister to the people of Evanston in need. To enable this to happen we are looking for volunteers from the church to help facilitate these dates.
For each overnight event we will want:
1 person who will stay overnight with the guests (A staff person from Interfaith Action will also stay overnight. And Caryl Weinberg will also be present for the first several nights.
2 people to set up for the event in the evening (cots, blankets, etc.)
2 people to tear down the event in the morning (putting away cots, blankets, etc.)
Currently our dates set aside for the Overnight Warming Center are – December 4-18 and January 15-21. This does not mean we will be open all those nights. Rather, we need to plan to cover those nights, in the event the temperature drops below 15 degrees. The decision as to whether the center will be open or not will be made by 9AM the day you sign up for.
Each of our volunteers must undergo a background check and training to participate. (Training to be determined at a later date). To fill out a background check form please click HERE.
Feel free to contact Caryl Weinberg (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Kelly Levander (email@example.com) for more details or information.
Please take a moment to look over your calendar and sign up for either an overnight or to help with tear down and set up. Thanks for your help!
