Deacons' Projects
Fellowship Hour: On Sundays, after the first service, Deacons host a time of fellowship that includes coffee, tea, juice, cookies, and healthy snacks. Here’s a great opportunity for members, visitors, and children to welcome new faces, greet friends, and be strengthened as the body of the church.
Blood Drive: The Annual Blood Drive is hosted in partnership with LifeSource, Chicagoland's Blood Center, and in cooperation with other participating community churches. Each generous decision to donate blood is an opportunity to save up to three lives.
Flower Delivery: At Christmas and Easter the Deacons deliver holiday plants and cards to homebound members of our congregation.
Clothes Closet: This community outreach ministry supplies gently used clothing and personal items to those in need. On the first and third Saturday of each month the Deacons' Clothes Closet is open from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. On those days Deacons, often assisted by community volunteers, sort and distribute donated items to as many as 125 adult guests. Approximately 3000 guests a year are compassionately served. We work in alliance with the American Indian Center, Cambodian Outreach, Reba Place, and organizations in need of children’s clothing.
Angel Tree: In partnership with Prison Fellowship, the Angel Tree Program is sponsored in cooperation with the Lawndale Community Presbyterian Church. Through the giving spirit of our congregation, the project provides Christmas gifts for children from their incarcerated parents.
Special Offerings: The Deacons' ministry is supported solely by Communion Sunday loose plate offerings. When you give cash to the loose plate offering or checks designated “Deacons’ Fund”, your gifts are matched in compassion and service on behalf of those with whom we share.
Vision Screening: Vision Screening/Testing is available the third Saturday of the month to Souper Saturday guests for the detection of numerous eye diseases and vision acuity. Training is provided to individuals interested in serving as volunteer vision screeners.
All Church Fellowship: Occasionally the Deacons are called upon to organize social opportunities for all ages. We kick off the summer with a Hot Dog Social and have lemonade on the church lawn following worship. We've also begun the tradition of a pancake breakfast served on New Years Day in the church dining room. We're always looking for new ideas to bring the community together!
Backpack Project: The Backpack outreach project provides backpacks filled with school supplies donated by participating members of the congregation to Evanston’s children in need.
Homebound Communion: Deacons deliver communion to homebound members of the congregation on Communion Sundays throughout the year. If you would like to find out more about receiving communion at home, please contact Carol Jefferson at ext. 224.
